A checklist for opening day at a new location

Four weeks out: people

Most opening problems are people problems. Make sure every role is hired, every new starter has started training, and every shift for the first two weeks has an experienced lead from another site.

  • Confirm the opening team and their roles

  • Assign onboarding and role-specific courses

  • Pair each new starter with an experienced buddy

  • Share the opening schedule with everyone involved

One week out: the space

Walk the site with the same checklist every location uses. Equipment working, stock in, safety checks done, signage up. Anything that fails becomes a task with an owner and a deadline, not a note on a clipboard.

The day before: rehearse

Run a soft opening or a full practice shift. Watch where people hesitate, what they ask, and where the checklists don’t match reality. Fix the checklists, not just the moment.

Opening day and the first two weeks

Run opening and closing checklists every day, review them every evening, and hold a short team huddle before each shift. The first two weeks set the habits the location will keep, so make sure they’re the right ones.
