And why the physical economy needs more attention
When artificial intelligence gained widespread attention in recent years, expectations were enormous. AI was supposed to exponentially increase productivity, transform entire industries and fundamentally change the way we work. In certain areas — particularly in knowledge-intensive, digital work — these effects have become visible.
At the same time, a more nuanced picture is emerging: despite significant investment, measurable economic breakthroughs remain elusive for many companies. Pilot projects get launched but rarely achieve broad-scale adoption. Applications impress in concept presentations but deliver limited impact in day-to-day operations. The actual ROI is often hard to quantify.
This raises a fundamental question: Is the lack of value creation due to the technology itself — or to where and how it's being applied?
The largely unaddressed reality: physical value creation
The first major wave of AI focused primarily on digital knowledge work: writing, analysing, coding, planning. Activities that are structured, data-driven and largely screen-based.
But a large part of the economy works differently. Industries like hospitality, hotels, retail and services create value not in strategic meetings or spreadsheets, but through operational work on the ground. They are defined by decentralised locations, high-paced environments and direct customer interaction.
At the same time, they face significant structural pressure: persistent labour shortages, high turnover and language barriers complicate daily operations — while rising costs and growing customer expectations further tighten economic margins.
Quality still needs to be delivered consistently — across locations and in real time. Yet most existing software was built primarily for administrative contexts. It supports planning, reporting or communication, but often falls short when it comes to actual execution in day-to-day operations.
Operational excellence rarely fails because of strategy
In conversations with decentralised organisations, a recurring pattern emerges: strategies, standards and target outcomes are clearly defined. The challenge isn't in the concept — it's in reliable execution.
Knowledge gets lost. Standards are interpreted differently. Information reaches teams late or fragmented. Management often only receives feedback once quality issues have already had a financial impact.
The problem is structural — not strategic.
AI beyond analytics: support in daily operations
If AI is to reach its full potential, it can't stop at back-office analytics or management-level insights. It needs to work where actual value is created: in daily operations.
That means detecting operational deviations early, making their root causes transparent and surfacing the financial impact. On that basis, concrete and actionable measures can be triggered — not in theory, but directly where they make a difference.
What matters most is that technology doesn't just analyse, but integrates into existing workflows. Only then does it create real value.
Adoption determines impact
In the physical economy, real-world usability determines whether digital solutions succeed or fail. Systems that create additional effort or offer no immediate benefit won't be used sustainably — regardless of how advanced the underlying technology is.
Ease of use, mobile availability and tangible day-to-day relief aren't optional extras. They're prerequisites.
Why we started Bounti
Bounti was born from the conviction that the physical economy is underserved by technology.

The next AI wave will be operational
The next phase of AI development will likely focus less on optimising digital knowledge work and more on providing structural support for physical, decentralised value creation.
Not in the conference room. Not in the code editor. But in kitchens, stores, hotels and shop floors.
Where quality needs to be delivered every single day — and where technology has largely been absent.
